SF Event Update: Traveling on Purpose

Just heard from Elizabeth about the guest she’s bringing, and sent the below to the San Francisco list as an event update. Should be good!

While travel may seem a luxury these days, it can be just what you need to find direction during turbulent times. This is not a new idea. Sabbaticals, walkabouts, pilgrimages, vision quests, and trips of all types are time-tested tools of personal transformation.

Our hosts this month, Elizabeth Becker and Todd Sotkiewicz, are well qualified to explore this with us. Elizabeth runs leadership adventure tours for this purpose. And Todd’s company, Lonely Planet, publishes books like “The Career Break Book” and “Volunteer: A Traveler’s Guide to Making a Difference Around the World” that are gems for those in transition.

And while Traveling on Purpose requires creating distance from your everyday world, you don’t need to spend a lot of money or go long distances to do this. Two guests will be joining our discussion who’ll add richly to this dimension of our talk – Doug McConnell, host of OpenRoad.TV, and Anthony Sandberg, who regularly sails all over the bay in the course of running his company OCSC Sailing.

So for this discussion about travel, we’ll have you covered by land as well as sea, local as well as global.

Letterboxing

Check out this cool video about letterboxing on Bay Area Backroads.  Letterboxing is a treasure hunt in nature where you find a series of hidden letterboxes that contain handmade rubber stamps and a stamp book. When you find a letterbox, you stamp your “passport” with that box’s stamp and then leave your stamp in that box’s book. Watch the video, it’ll make sense.

Denver: February Meeting Notes

20090210-talent-in-the-room

Denver, as always it was a wonderful confluence of the Abundance League. For this gathering we chose the more intimate environs of Susan’s home, and to focus our time just on member announcements and mingling. Because this meeting focused on passions, needs and gifts of all of us present, we devoted more time to the check-in portion and exchanged some quick feedback, saving the deeper conversations for mingling afterwards.

As a new approach to note-taking, we followed Susan’s idea of passing the laptop around so that each person who spoke took notes for the person speaking after them. This enabled each to transition from speaking to listening; it also ensured that nobody spent all their time typing and all could give their attention. I think it worked pretty darn well: we got good notes that required no very little  editing, which allows us to be faster at posting to the blog!

While I have your attention, our next confluence will be Tuesday March 10, 2009 (location TBA) at Hooked on Colfax. Continue reading ‘Denver: February Meeting Notes’

SF, You’re Invited: Traveling on Purpose to Change Your World

We all know travel can be transformative.  A great stretch of road, a deserted beach, unfamiliar food and customs, that guy or gal in the bar…these have the power to change us.

But what if you used travel on purpose to be transformative? What if you could design an adventure to change your life and the lives of others?

Traveling on purpose is changing the world of travel and personal development. It involves journeying to gain skills and experiences, hiking through landscapes that are different and demanding, working on a big project to increase your contribution to the world, and forming a community to support your growth. The convergence of adventure travel, personal development, and community building doesn’t need to be expensive or take you far away from home. You can design your own big project adventure close to home with friends and family.

Our speakers this month are Elizabeth Becker, principal of Becker & Company Consulting, a go-to-market strategy firm, and leader of The Machu Picchu Leadership Adventure; and Todd Sotkiewicz , general manager of Lonely Planet and a world traveler.
