We had a great showing for the discussion about Eric Poettschacher’s Shapeshifters.net, a global network of creatives. Thanks to everyone that attended and to those that brought food for the potluck. We had a truly abundant potluck including some wonderful home-cooked Japanese food. Below are Eric’s top five lessons from his work plus member announcements:
1. You don´t know what you don´t know. Have you ever considered that the solution for your problem lies in the hands of a South African papermaker? Get your daily dose of serendipity and consciously connect with other worlds that are absolutely foreign to you. Make use of your cultural blindspots. It pays.
2. Your idea/product/service does not get recognition in your local environment? Don´t worry. What you do has a totally different meaning in other parts of the world. Remember the Brazilian photographer on Shapeshifters? At home she was one of many. In Namibia she turned out to be one of a kind.
3. Web 2.0 is filled with “Look at me how great I am” postings and profiles. But there is nothing unique about being unique. Try out a new approach instead and ask youself: What is it that I really require? What exactly do I want to share? Then reach out to your peers on Shapeshifters with a crisp and clear posting. Put in clarity and you´ll get it back.
4. Focus your mind. If you concentrate on gossip you will get more gossip. If you concentrate on results you will get even more results. Whatever you pay attention to will grow. Each and every posting makes a difference. Use it like an arrow. Your intention matters more than anything. Ready, aim, write.
5. Don´t assume you are normal. People use Social Software in many different ways. It takes me 50 seconds to post a comment. In other cultures it requires two dozen people and three weeks. Do we want more quantity of communication or more quality? You choose. Welcome to the World of Shapeshifters.
