Thank you Todd Siler of Think Like a Genius!

We want to take a moment to appreciate Todd Siler of Think Like a Genius for his facilitation of a live 3-D modeling lab for tAL participants!  After a brief presentation about the history, philosophy, and practice of Think Like a Genius we literally dove into bags of modeling clay, tongue depressors, colorful pipe cleaners, photos, and styrofoam balls to create dynamic visual installations of how we feel when we are in our element and engaged in our passions/projects.  Ideas bounced, sparks flew, and time stopped!   Once our models were ready, each presented his/her model and received feedback and questions from Todd and the group, which deepened the experience even further.

And another thank you to Todd’s partners Eric Siler and Scott Perlman for their contributions to making this Abundance League meeting one to remember!

Warmly,

Susan (+Taj)

P.S.  Please feel free to respond to this post if you’d like to share your experiences….

Denver March Meeting Notes

TALers converged March 10th at Hooked on Colfax in the Bluebird District for an interesting discussion with Taj Moore on the  social photography experiment called the “postmodern photosafari.” Postmodern photosafaris are field trips where people go take pictures where they don’t usually think to or have access to.  Past photosafaris include San Francisco’s Chinatown, a research ship, Denver’s own Colfax Avenue, and the Denver Stock Show.

Taj’s work on photosafaris has created some interesting community experiences in which typical perceptions of everyday places and everyday people shift.  A back alley on Colfax becomes a special landscape … a woman gets her photograph taken by 3 different people with varying perspectives at various times of day … something interesting happens with these perspectives. And with a community gallery showing  following the Colfax Photosafari, Taj saw a convergence of community participants  and their loved ones connecting to hear each other’s stories while appreciating the photos.

Taj presented on the Colfax Photosafari in Pecha Kucha format, “a presentation format in which content can be easily, efficiently and informally shown, usually at a public event designed for that purpose. Under the format, a presenter shows 20 images for 20 seconds apiece, for a total time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds (Wikipedia)”. Taj’s version was actually five minutes, but the Q & A period lasted much longer with everyone’s questions and observations.

For more information about the next social photography event on Colfax you can email Taj: taj (a) gmail.com or go to ColfaxLove.com.

Please join us for the next Abundance League gathering in Denver Tuesday, April 14th at Hooked on Colfax, where we’ll share passions, needs, and gifts and hear from presenters Todd Siler, PhD and Scott “The Mayor” Perlman on the realization of their passion project and consultative enterprise Think Like a Genius. Denver—March Confluence, Taj Moore Speaks on the Postmodern Photosafari (Tue 3/10 at Hooked on Colfax)

Join us for our next Abundance League gathering this Tuesday, March 10th, when we will share our passions, needs, and gifts and hear about social innovation through photography from presenter Taj Moore.

Taj Moore will present “postmodern photosafari: the influence of social photography on perspective, place + purpose”.  Taj has been conducting “postmodern photosafaris” since 2005, beginning with a simple idea: gather people to take pictures in places they wouldn’t normally have access to, would normally not think to go, and see what happens. What does a place look like when a dozen people photograph it? How do they see a familar place as if for the first time?

Nearly a dozen photosafaris later, Taj now organizes Denver gatherings around Colfax Avenue and the ranching lifestyle, while photosfaristas in San Francisco continue to explore the Bay Area’s hidden treasures.

For some examples of photosafaris, look at these:

Denver: Notes from the January Confluence

We had a great meeting last week with a dozen of us gathered to discuss what we felt was good in our lives last year and what we hope to do in 2009. Susan led a group activity for folks to meet with each other and share 2008 accomplishments and their personal impacts, and then individuals took turns sharing with the group passions for 2009 as well as announcements for current projects coming to fruition.  It was inspiring to hear how much everyone had done in 2008, and we look forward to continuing to support each other’s needs as we explore our passions and carry out our 2009 projects.

Fittingly, we came across the following thoughts on our hidden passions from The Daily OM, and how we might revive them in the new year:

Nothing can fill the emptiness that remains in a space vacated by a passion that we have tossed aside. Besides, life is too short to stop doing what you love, and it is never too late to rediscover your favorite things. If you gave up playing an instrument, painting, drawing, spending time in nature, or any other activity or interest that you once loved to do, now may be the time to take up that passion again.

Read the whole piece It’s Never Too Late on the Daily OM ».

Below is a collection of what is coming up for people so far in 2009 in the way of announcements: Continue reading ‘Denver: Notes from the January Confluence’

Denver, You’re Invited: 11/18 6:30pm at Museo de las Americas – Elizabeth Dicapo

The Abundance League meets this coming Tuesday, November 18th at Museo de Las Americas, in the heart of the Santa Fe Drive Arts District. We’re stoked like a late-Fall fireplace to have Elizabeth Dicapo, the Museo’s Development Manager, speak with us about her experiences with the Museo de Las Americas.

The Museo website describes its mission:

“The Museo de las Américas educates our community about the diversity of Latino Americano art and culture from ancient to contemporary through innovative exhibitions and programs.”

“With the Latino population growing exponentially in the Denver and wider communities, the Museo plays an important role in building pride in the Latino community’s heritage and promoting understanding among
cultures. Other history and art museums in Denver cannot focus on one segment of the community in a sustained or comprehensive manner. The Museo was organized to fill this important niche in the cultural milieu.”

You can find more information about the Museo de las Americas at www.museo.org. And as always, please come prepared to spend a few minutes briefly telling everyone about a couple of your passions/projects, what you need to pursue them, and any gifts you offer to support each other in leading inspired lives. We start at 6:30 pm, and end around 9:30 pm, but you are always welcome to come and go at any time.

Denver Meeting Notes: August 2008

We enjoyed another fruitful harvest at this month’s Abundance League meeting, with guest presenter Lawrence Phipps of Apogaea. We met at a new spot this month, Denver’s own St. Mark’s/Thin Man in their downstairs salon. Through sharing our passions, projects, needs, and gifts, many connections were made. Among the connections made (and gifts shared) at this month’s Abundance League were the following:

-Chelsea gave Lawrence a resource on how to get a “reprieve from the tic-toc man” through polyphasic sleep techniques

-Lawrence brainstormed with Susan location options for her Laundromat Project as well as potential for approximating to her vision of a creative arts center/public space through smaller, more realistic steps.

-Margarita approached Susan about a possible retreat facilitation for one of her boards

-Bagus and Andrew shared their passion for jazz music

-Margarita offered her event planning expertise to the group (possibly for a future tAL gathering?…)

-Susan will engage with Chelsea’s business planning expertise (and her ability to inspire people to take risks) to guide the Laundromat project

-Lawrence found potential “fresh blood” for Apogaea with tAL members for future projects

-Taj expressed a need to clarify his focus and personal core, and through a retreat planning consultation with Susan was able to obtain a customized retreat plan (free of charge to tAL members).

Lawrence presented an overview of Apogaea, Colorado’s annual version of ‘Burning Man’, where people come to explore their inner superheroes through creating, participating, and sharing at an experimental arts/music forum. There is no selling at Apogaea; rather, it’s a gift economy. Gifts come in many forms: art, performance, installations, food, drink, and anything else under the sun and beyond. One of the main highlights noted by Lawrence was that Apogaea has been inspired by Burning Man’s new paradigm of community service (Hurricane Katrina rebuild, new technology, and inventions to name a few), and seeks to plant seeds in Colorado to germinate this paradigm locally.

Denver Meeting Notes: June 2008

We had a fruitful gathering at Susan’s house this month, including a fantastic presentation by Elizabeth Weiland from the Insight Speaker Series. Elizabeth shared her story of how she came to found an organization devoted to bringing world renowned speakers such as Desmond Tutu, Isabel Allende, and Charles Barkley to Denver. Please see the Insight Speaker Series website at www.insightspeakers.com for event information.

Through announcements we connected individual needs with individual gifts. Here are some of the highlights:

Taj is engaging with Elizabeth on help with his business card

Melissa will consult with Susan next week to help her plan retreats that foster joy and fun

Susan found dance community mentorship through Paul, the Director of Ballet Arts Theater

Elizabeth will assist in editing Susan’s Laundromat Project Business Plan

Elizabeth engaged the entire group in a brainstorming session on how to sell tickets and outreach for the Insight Speaker Series

People needed to eat and people brought great food!

Denver Meeting Notes: April 2008

Dear Leaguers,

Thanks to everyone who made the meeting happen, including our featured facilitator Bari Tessler, and everyone who attended.

Bari Tessler led a discussion on Conscious Bookkeeping via Web Chat while Abundance Leaguers nibbled ratatouille with goat cheese , drank wine and tea, and asked questions. Bari is a teacher, therapist, speaker, and the founder of Conscious Bookkeeping, based out of Boulder, Colorado, and we were delighted that she took time out to meet with us via satellite!

It was indeed the perfect time to explore intentionality around finances, being that we met a day after the income tax deadline (phew!). We found Bari’s approach to be holistic and refreshing, looking at money from a values standpoint while debunking generational belief systems that are often unconsciously created. Questions flew across the living room of Deb’s house to the computer screen while Bari laid out some of the foundational steps to create better relationships with money.

A few nuggets for those of you interested in Bari’s work:

Bari Tessler will facilitate an all day session on conscious bookkeeping with intention to transform your relationship with money on a practical, psychological and spiritual level. This session is of no cost to you! Tools for financial freedom is a free one-day workshop offered by Conscious Bookkeeping. Don’t miss it! Email info@consciousbookkeeping.com to register, or visit the website at www.consciousbookkeeping.com for more information.
