Denver Meeting Notes: September 2008

What a great meeting! I am always impressed with fruitful even a small gathering proves to be. This month’s meeting of the Abundance League took place last Wednesday at Leela European Café and focused on personal connections as we each discussed our passions & projects. Meeting notes follow…

Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 14th. Yes, Tuesday! We’re changing it up for October. Mark your calendars. We haven’t settled on a featured speaker, artist, or activity yet. Got an idea? Just reply and let us know.

I want to point out that abundance doesn’t just happen once a month when we get together. It’s something we practice every day through the connections we make and the extraordinary generosity we practice with each other. A lot of us continue the conversations between meetings and have real impact on each other’s lives. Let’s bring some of those stories back next month!

Denver Meeting Notes: August 2008

We enjoyed another fruitful harvest at this month’s Abundance League meeting, with guest presenter Lawrence Phipps of Apogaea. We met at a new spot this month, Denver’s own St. Mark’s/Thin Man in their downstairs salon. Through sharing our passions, projects, needs, and gifts, many connections were made. Among the connections made (and gifts shared) at this month’s Abundance League were the following:

-Chelsea gave Lawrence a resource on how to get a “reprieve from the tic-toc man” through polyphasic sleep techniques

-Lawrence brainstormed with Susan location options for her Laundromat Project as well as potential for approximating to her vision of a creative arts center/public space through smaller, more realistic steps.

-Margarita approached Susan about a possible retreat facilitation for one of her boards

-Bagus and Andrew shared their passion for jazz music

-Margarita offered her event planning expertise to the group (possibly for a future tAL gathering?…)

-Susan will engage with Chelsea’s business planning expertise (and her ability to inspire people to take risks) to guide the Laundromat project

-Lawrence found potential “fresh blood” for Apogaea with tAL members for future projects

-Taj expressed a need to clarify his focus and personal core, and through a retreat planning consultation with Susan was able to obtain a customized retreat plan (free of charge to tAL members).

Lawrence presented an overview of Apogaea, Colorado’s annual version of ‘Burning Man’, where people come to explore their inner superheroes through creating, participating, and sharing at an experimental arts/music forum. There is no selling at Apogaea; rather, it’s a gift economy. Gifts come in many forms: art, performance, installations, food, drink, and anything else under the sun and beyond. One of the main highlights noted by Lawrence was that Apogaea has been inspired by Burning Man’s new paradigm of community service (Hurricane Katrina rebuild, new technology, and inventions to name a few), and seeks to plant seeds in Colorado to germinate this paradigm locally.

Elizabeth shared her story of how she came to found an organization devoted to bringing world renowned speakers such as Desmond Tutu, Isabel Allende, and Charles Barkley to Denver. Denver Meeting Notes: April 2008

Dear Leaguers,

Thanks to everyone who made the meeting happen, including our featured facilitator Bari Tessler, and everyone who attended.

Bari Tessler led a discussion on Conscious Bookkeeping via Web Chat while Abundance Leaguers nibbled ratatouille with goat cheese , drank wine and tea, and asked questions. Bari is a teacher, therapist, speaker, and the founder of Conscious Bookkeeping, based out of Boulder, Colorado, and we were delighted that she took time out to meet with us via satellite!

It was indeed the perfect time to explore intentionality around finances, being that we met a day after the income tax deadline (phew!). We found Bari’s approach to be holistic and refreshing, looking at money from a values standpoint while debunking generational belief systems that are often unconsciously created. Questions flew across the living room of Deb’s house to the computer screen while Bari laid out some of the foundational steps to create better relationships with money.

A few nuggets for those of you interested in Bari’s work:

Bari Tessler will facilitate an all day session on conscious bookkeeping with intention to transform your relationship with money on a practical, psychological and spiritual level. This session is of no cost to you! Tools for financial freedom is a free one-day workshop offered by Conscious Bookkeeping. Don’t miss it! Email info@consciousbookkeeping.com to register, or visit the website at www.consciousbookkeeping.com for more information.

I hope you will join us on Wednesday, May 14th for the next Abundance League gathering. Please come prepared to tell us about your passions, discuss your needs, and share your gifts so that we can support each other in leading inspired lives. Denver Meeting Notes: March 2008

Heath Hillman led a discussion about tea: who it comes from & why it’s wonderful. Heath is the import manager for Two Leaves and a Bud tea company, and lent us his passion & expertise for the evening. www.twoleavesandabud.com

Tea is inherently social; it stimulates the mind and the spirit, and certainly led to a spirited question & answer session. After looking over a dozen-or-so samples of leaves and hearing about some of their outstanding characteristics, we sampled some of the best of the lot: Te Quan Yin, a jasmine-scented green, and a really “tippy” Assam black were outstanding. None of us had ever tasted teas quite like these. The Te Quan Yin was a particularly rarified treat; it smelled like honey. Heath later told us this one normally costs about $20/cup. Wow! Now that you know Heath, you never need to worry about getting good tea again!

Some interesting tidbits:

– All tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant (you might find these in your landscaping)

– White tea comes from the very first leaves and buds, and this honored harvest is traditionally performed only by women.

– Only black tea likes boiling water, white and green teas prefer to be brewed closer to 175 degrees to keep from burning the leaves. Of course, if you’re in Leadville, what’s the difference at that altitude?

NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will feature Bari Tessler & Conscious Bookkeeping. Started in 2001, “Conscious Bookkeeping is for anyone that would like to integrate their relationship with money with the rest of their life and the values that they live by.” Bari earned her MA in Somatic Psychology from Naropa University. I had the pleasure of taking Bari’s level one class in 2005 and it changed my life in many ways, not least among them was meeting Maritza, co-founder of the Abundance League.

Denver, You’re Invited: Thu 3/27 6pm – Heath Hillman + Two Leaves & A Bud

It’s time for the next meeting of the Abundance League. This month, Heath Hillman will be facilitating a discussion about the art of tea, its many types, history, and the people it comes from. He will accompany the discussion with tea tastings of many great varieties from Two Leaves and a Bud tea compamy (and for you caffeine-sensitive people, there will be naturally caffeine-free tea for you to enjoy).

Heath has a passion for tea. The Import/Export Manager for Two Leaves and a Bud Tea Company, he began working with tea three years ago and has been exploring this “vast and narrow conundrum” since. He believes tea to be simple in its essence but complex in its art, a life-long journey rather than a task to complete. This should be a fascinating evening as we explore the culture & history of the world’s most popular beverage (after water, of course).
